#3236 EXCITER L/C HOT TRAIL PORTING INSTRUCTIONS
This is a high performance modification designed to get the maximum reliable power from your Exciter. The use of our Exciter Balancer Kit on the 1987-1990 models is necessary to insure clutch and engine life! We also recommend the use of our #3170 Coolant Mod Kit on the 1987—89 models, or the #4906 surge tank kit on the 1990 and newer models which should be installed prior to engine reassembly. Also use the #3240 Oil Injection Kit for improved reliability. (Note: Check manifold to port alignment on the 1991 and newer Exciters!)
* Reassemble engine being certain to properly clean everything. Lubricate pistons, rings, and cylinders thoroughly with your 2 cycle oil during assembly. Piston rings should always be replaced.
* Properly align your clutches. This is essential!! Use #3172 Yamaha! Alignment Shim Kit for precise adjustment and after obtaining correct clutch alignment install our #3173 engine tensioner kit to maintain the correct alignment.
Pre-mix your first tank of fuel 50-1 with Yamalube 2 cycle oil for proper break in. Do not put oil in the fuel after the first tank of fuel. Do not start engine until fuel in tank is pre-mixed first.
* This porting was designed for 44mm carbs. Use our #3238 carb kit which is pre jetted for this port
Carb sync must be properly set. Use of the #1070 sync gauge is highly recommended for proper adjustment.
The gearing should be changed for best top end . We have found the optimum gearing to be a 19—29 ratio.
Use unleaded premium fuel 92 octane minimum.
This porting package has been extensively tested and developed using our #3237 twin pipes. Do not use any other type or brand of exhaust pipes or a substantial performance loss or engine seizure will probably occur.
* Your oil pump output must be modified for increased output. This is accomplished by adding one 0.5mm shim (part# 137-13137-00—50) under the pump cam. This can easily be done while the cylinders and carbs are still off by removing the three screws from the top of :he oil pump. Underneath is a cam which is retained by one nut. Carefuily remove this nut and washer. Underneath will be some shims. Leave the existing shims installed and add Uie new shim to the ones already there. Be careful when removing the cam for the first time for any shims that might be sticking to it so as not to loose any. When everything is all put back together adjust your oil pump so its in stock position (line up the dot).
