3179 POLARIS INDY ENGINE TENSIONER

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

This engine tensioner is designed to prevent the engine torque from deflecting the motor on its’ mounts. This deflection changes the clutch and secondary alignments as well as the clutch center distance. lts use will result in longer belt life, better shifting and increased efficieny

1. Align the motor in the chassis to factory specifications. \ote: Reichard’s Performance Center has a shim kit, #3178, for motor al. ignment -

2. Support the sled under the belly pan and remove the left side ski coil-over shock unit.

3. Drill out rivets holding the boot to the belly pan around the tie rod

4. Place the backing plate (small plate with four holes) against the frame above the opening for the tie rod and hold it up and towards the front. (Fig. 1)

5. For Indys up to 1990 see back diagram fig. 1. Mark the center of one hole and remove the plate. Drill a 5/16” hole on your mark thru the frame. Bolt the plate to the frame temporarily using one of the 5/16” X 1” long bolts. Drill the other hole in the frame using the plate as a guide.

6. For all 1991 and newer Indys see hack diagram fig. -4. Remove bolt securing frame support bracket and bolt the plate to the frame temporari1y using one of the 5/16 N 1” long bolts. Drill the other hole in the frame using the plate as a guide.

7. Remove the first bolt and install the plate with (5) holes on the outside of the frame (on 91 and newer models install plate in place of the aluminum spacer washer between frame and support bracket) now do it to the back-up plate on the outside of the frame leaving the bolts loose. (Fig. 2)

8. Hook the eyebolt of the tensioner assembly in the hole of the inside plate and place the tubular bracket against the (2) bosses on the left front of the crankcase with the long slot towards the center of the motor. Set eyebolt/adjuster so bracket sets flat against the engine.

9. Install (1) 6 mm bolt in the lower boss finger tight.
